Lifetime Carbon Neutral® Certified Company
With the UK racing to achieve net zero by 2050, more businesses are aiming to reduce their carbon footprint or make their operations carbon-neutral. As a lifetime carbon-neutral company, using our eco-friendly destruction services for your documents or other materials can help reduce the carbon footprint of your own waste emissions.
At Shred Station, we’re always working on new innovations to reduce the impacts of our confidential destruction services. We also work to support innovation in the wider recycling industry to ensure a more sustainable future. It is a core pillar of our ethos to cause minimal environmental impacts and we work hard to reduce emissions. This ensures our customers receive the greenest service in the industry.
We destroy tens of thousands of tonnes of paperwork per year and because we are firm believers in recycling everything possible, every sheet is recycled at UK mills. We also have many procedures in place to recycle non-paper materials via dedicated waste streams. For example, shredded plastics are melted into new plastic pellets and shredded hard drives are sent to metal refineries.
In January 2019, Shred Station received its first-ever CarbonNeutral® certified company accreditation. Every year since then, we have been certified as a carbon-neutral business in line with the requirements of the Carbon Neutral Protocol. In 2023, we decided that annual carbon neutrality wasn’t enough. We wanted every customer who has ever used Shred Station to receive the same carbon-neutral service. So, our lifetime emissions were independently assessed by Climate Impact Partners and Nature Positive. Our goal was to offset these emissions in their entirety by 2030. We beat that goal by six years, and in 2024 became the UK’s only lifetime CarbonNeutral® certified waste management company.
For full transparency into our emissions, we have published every one of our certificates and every greenhouse gas assessment report on this page. We reduce emissions wherever possible, only offsetting as a last resort. You can find more information on the ways we reduce emissions here.

We supported two verified offsetting projects in 2024. These were The Degraded Grasslands Afforestation Project in Uruguay and the Wind Power Portfolio in Turkey. The Sustainable Development Goals these projects support are:
- Goal 7: Affordable and Clean Energy
- Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth
- Goal 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure
- Goal 13: Climate Action
- and Goal 15: Life on Land.
Please note that our certifications cover emissions from the previous year. For example, for our 2024 certification, Climate Impact Partners and Nature Positive were assessing the full year of emissions from 1st Jan – 31st December 2023.

In 2023, we supported sustainable development in China through a renewable energy project. The site we chose from this renewable project portfolio was the Zhaoyuan Xinlong Shunde Project which can be found in China’s Heilongjiang province. As the world’s largest polluting country, projects like these are vital to win the fight against climate change. The Sustainable Development Goals this project supports are:
- Goal 7: Affordable and Clean Energy
- Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth
- Goal 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure
- Goal 13: Climate Action.

In 2022, we supported the Fuxin Wind project in China’s Hebei province. Wind farms like these are crucial for increasing renewable energy usage and also phasing down coal consumption in the East. Outside of our CarbonNeutral® certification, we also planted 10,067 new trees in 2022, making our operations for the year carbon-negative. The Fuxin Wind project worked towards three Sustainable Development Goals. These were:
- Goal 7: Affordable and Clean Energy
- Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth
- Goal 13: Climate Action.

In 2021, we supported two offsetting projects. One was the West India Wind Project for the second year running. The other was the Gobi Wind Power Project in China – an impressive site with over 200 wind turbines. As two of the world’s biggest polluters, it’s vital to enrich the supply of renewable power in these countries that would otherwise be drawn from fossil fuels. These projects support four of the Sustainable Development Goals:
- Goal 7: Affordable and Clean Energy
- Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth
- Goal 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure
- Goal 13: Climate Action.

In 2020, we supported the West India Wind Project. This project boasts 242 wind turbines spread across three regions – Jaisalmer, Rajkot, and Surendranagar. The combined capacity of these turbines is over 190MW and the project employs over 100 local permanent workers. It supports four of the Sustainable Development Goals. These are:
- Goal 7: Affordable and Clean Energy
- Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth
- Goal 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure
- Goal 13: Climate Action.

2019 was our first year as an annual CarbonNeutral® certified company, so the project we selected for this certification will always have a special place in our hearts. It was the Uganda Community Reforestation Project. Working to do much more than just plant trees, this voluntary reforestation project rewarded local farmers with not just money, but education about agroforestry, land fertility, business techniques, biodiversity, and conservation farming. It also empowered local women by mandating a rotating leadership structure to involve both men and women in the management of the projects. Over 6 million trees were planted across Uganda as a result of local farmers’ efforts and support from businesses like ours. The project also worked towards ten of the Sustainable Development Goals.
- Goal 1: No Poverty
- Goal 2: Zero Hunger
- Goal 3: Good Health and Wellbeing
- Goal 4: Quality Education
- Goal 5: Gender Equality
- Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation
- Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth
- Goal 10: Reduced Inequalities
- Goal 13: Climate Action
- and Goal 15: Life on Land.

In 2023, Climate Impact Partners completed our historic emissions assessment. The results of this assessment can be found in a report here.
Please note that this report does not cover 2018’s emissions as our 2019 certification covers these.
By offsetting our historic emissions to net zero in line with the requirements of the Carbon Neutral Protocol, we can share the wonderful news that we are officially, as of 2024, a lifetime carbon-neutral company. This was achieved by supporting the same two offsetting projects as detailed in our 2024 annual assessment.
