Shred Station trials Volvo’s Electric Demonstrator truck
Shred Station has just completed a two-week trial of a Volvo EFE Rigid – a demonstration model of one of Volvo’s state-of-the-art electric trucks.
For two weeks, we trialled the truck from our Norwich facility, using it for bespoke off-site work. We were very impressed with the vehicle.
Oliver Grice, our Operations Director said:
“It’s the intention of the business to start electrifying certain parts of our fleet in the next 12 months. Overall, we were very impressed and look forward to seeing more models”.
“We are continuing to look at options for electrifying our fleet and this is an option we’re looking at for an off-site collection vehicle. The vehicle in question can hold up to 9 tonnes of waste and has a range of up to 200 miles, so this works quite well for local off-site shredding services”.
Electric vehicle trials
This isn’t the first time we’ve trialled a fully electric vehicle. We have previously trialled an electric DAF LF, and will soon be trialling the Volta Truck after long production delays.
We already have electric vehicle charging points at our offices and depots, and with the map of fast chargers expanding across the country, we are confident that we could start to implement the use of electric trucks within the next year.
A greener future
Since our formation in 2008, reducing our environmental impacts has been a top priority at Shred Station.
In January 2019 we officially received CarbonNeutral® certification – a certification we have held ever since. We are always trying to find new ways to reduce our emissions, and the next big part of that process will be our vehicle emissions.
We’ve already purchased six fully electric JCB forklifts to replace our diesel models. This alone will save us approximately 62,000 litres of diesel per year – not to mention all of the emissions associated with that diesel consumption. But we know we can do more.
As more electric trucks become available, we are hopeful we can find a model that can meet our needs for both transporting materials across the country for off-site shredding, and powering an industrial shredder onboard our on-site shredding vehicles.
We would like to extend a huge thank you to Volvo for giving us the opportunity to try their fantastic vehicle. We can’t wait to see what the future of Volvo’s electric trucks looks like!
